As the seasons change, the temperature as well as your young athlete’s activity level, may be decreasing. Although frigid winter days may seem ideal for simply snuggling on the couch or snoozing, it's important to practice healthy habits year round. After all, the need for exercise doesn’t hibernate for the winter!
fit recently spoke with Mark McCloskey, Head Coach and Club Director of Sanford POWER Volleyball Academy, to discuss the benefits of regular movement and ways he encourages young athletes to stay active year-round.
fit encourages kids to move many times in many ways, each day. How do you motivate your young players to engage in daily activity?
"I give them movement specific routines that will help to develop skills in sports and other activities. For example, playing catch with a football also helps to work on a volleyball swing."
What benefits do you see in players that engage in regular movement?
"I notice that their practice habits and conditioning tend to be better. Also, their energy and effort levels tend to be higher."
What tips would you provide parents or coaches looking to alter their players’ sedentary habits?
"Create daily or weekly routines that offer movement activities intended for enjoyment, not just exercise. Some examples include: bike rides, walking a dog, swimming, sledding or scavenger hunts in a park."
