Lesson
We make choices all day long. Let’s help kids identify times during the day when they make choices and practice giving reasons why they made certain choices.
First and foremost, fit is about choices. Each day a child, no matter their age, makes many choices that impact their health and well-being. The lessons in this unit build awareness of the many moments each day when they can make a choice, then empowers them to make the healthy choice—the fit choice! Print and display the fit Posters to support healthy decision-making involving recharge, mood, food, and move.
Act out making a simple choice such as holding up a red and a blue marker and saying, “Hmm.” Then smile and draw with the blue one. Ask students to describe what you did (you made a choice!) and brainstorm possible reasons for your choice (e.g., you like blue; it’s dark and easier to see; the other was dry; etc.). Summarize your choice in a complete sentence: “I chose [the blue marker] because _______.”

Times We Make Choices
Captivate your learners’ attention by asking them about the choices they make each day. Draw their attention to the first slide. Ask them to think about what they choose to wear, eat, and do throughout their day. Have fun with the silly choice questions!
Reasons We Make Choices
Ask students to describe some of their choices. Explain that with fit, you will be talking a lot about choices, especially healthy choices.
Check for understanding: Think of a choice you made today. Was it a healthy one?
Sharing the Choices We Make
Students think-pair-share three choices they will make after school, then identify which ones will be healthy choices.
Download the Choices printable for students to record their after-school choices.
Ask students to share their plans with a partner. Highlight positive and healthy choices students make during the school day. Get ready to think about making choices that are good for your body and brain.
